Yoga from the heart in the sunny Okanagan
I am blessed to teach yoga in Kelowna and around the Okanagan, the heart of desert wine country in southern British Columbia. We have a vibrant and active yoga community, one that I am very proud to be a part of!
Here's what I've been up to lately.
Hi friends. Have you heard? @moga_moms are a top 100 finalist in the Telus Pitch small business contest. If they can get to #1 in the voting round (currently #9) they have the opportunity to win $100k! They are a kelowna bred, women run business whose sole purpose is to support moms. If they win the money they will launch a program called @birthyourpower that will be a much needed online resource for moms experiencing postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. Voting closes July 10! Only 4 days left to vote to help these local mamas help mamas across Canada! https://www.mogamoms.com/moga-telus-pitch/
Hi friends. I will be shutting this page down in the next couple of weeks, but that doesn't mean we are breaking up, LOL. Just simplifying, and to be honest, I feel like over the last year or so, the gap between my yoga world and my personal world has closed substantially - this is a good thing. It means we're real friends, not just Facebook friends. To stay in touch, you can 'friend' me personally. Or, LIKE Okanagan Yoga Retreats. For the past two summers, my amazing sister, Kristie (pictured below), has joined me as Retreat Manager and we are doing really beautiful stuff up at Predator Ridge. No gap. My family to yours.
Last year, through my work at the KGH Foundation, I had the extraordinary opportunity to work with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna as we partnered to raise $2 million to open Foundry Kelowna - an integrated care centre aimed at supporting the needs of youth and families struggling with mental illness. I learned so much, my heart was cracked wide open. There were days that it was too much to hold. We don't live in some big city where social problems only touch 'other people'. Here, everyone knows someone, loves someone, who has struggled with the devastation of mental illness. Which is why it is SO IMPORTANT to continue to support the work of CMHA Kelowna as they build programs and support for the people in our community who need help. I am super proud to be representing Oranj Fitness Kelowna in a community yoga fundraiser for CMHA, a collaboration made possible by GLOBAL FITNESS CENTRE and Tara Pilling Lifestyle Coach. <3 Please join this incredible ensemble of some of the finest teachers in the Okanagan for a beautiful practice. After Friday’s ‘Say Something’ themed Vinyasa Flow, I couldn’t help but follow up. 💛 So serendipitous that it was the rare occasion that we practiced in the JT studio at Oranj Fitness Kelowna. Behind the beautiful music, the message is really important. It’s hard to be a stand for things these days - there are so many critics and so much noise and social media has become such a punishing medium. But at the same time, we have a greater capacity than ever before to be connected and to come together for the things we believe in through social channels. Last week, I ‘said something’ on a recent KelownaNow article regarding the sexual assault allegations against Hedley. Wow. It was crazy - the response was terrifying actually. In addition to ignorance, people can be really mean. But the risk of not saying something is to consent to the status quo. And for the sake of our children, especially right now, the status quo is really no longer OK. Not for me. I’ll take the hate. Last Thursday was anti bullying day. Jade and I talked about why it would be important to #saysomething if you see someone getting bullied. And she said it was important because maybe that person would then feel like they had a friend. That they were not all alone. Yes. Exactly sweet girl. We are their greatest teachers. If we are too afraid, how can we expect our children to do it? If you believe in something, when an issue or cause makes every single cell in your body tingle, say something. My babies, and yours, are worth it. 🙏🏼 With gratitude to all the brave women and men that came before us, who had the courage to say something so that we may have the freedom we have today. #buticanthelpmyself #saysomething #effthestatusquo

So much courage. 💛 Warning - it’s a lot, and the details may be triggering. But this abuse in our sacred practice has to stop. Even though there are no names, it’s staggering that the abusers referenced are so often the teachers that have been elevated to celebrity status. I’m so grateful to Rachel Brathen for using her enormous platform to allow women (and some men) to finally tell their stories - it’s important for all of us to understand the magnitude of the abuse culture in yoga. There’s no way to ‘tidy’ this up with a yoga sutra or a Sanskrit meme. The teachings were never meant to hold space for this. There are so many parts of this that are so ugly, not the least of which is the twisting of wisdom to rationalize sexual abuse.
💛 Beyond grateful to spend my summers doing what I love. Registration for 2018 retreats at Predator Ridge Resort opens this Friday!!!!!

Heart, stay open. Please don't close. The need to support mental health initiatives continues to reveal itself. We have a long way to go in how we understand and support people living with mental illnesses. Yoga and Meditation are invaluable tools to help cope with the suffering and pain on the the path to healing. In Kelowna, the The Lit from Within Project has been funding twice weekly yoga and meditation classes at the Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna. This offering would not have been possible without the support of our yoga community. Know that your gifts have a huge impact. Yoga and meditation alone do not 'cure' mental illness. But I know for sure they can keep a person connected to the light just enough to keep going, to stay alive, even in the darkest days. There are times when we feel helpless in holding space for the people in our lives touched by mental health struggles. I do. So Chels, Pam and I created something. And it's part of a solution. If you would like to help Lit to continue to fund these these programs, please join us on Thurs. Aug 17 on the rooftop of the Eldorado Hotel. It will be an evening of yoga, live music, hope and inspiration. $55/ person. $99 Bring a friend. ALL PROCEEDS will be donated to cause. Thank you for your continued support and love. Heart stay open. ❤️ Tickets are available on my website at shaunanyroseyoga.ca -- -- If you have a gift that you can contribute to the silent auction, please contact email@example.com 💕

To say that I'm anything other than totally thrilled about this would be completely inauthentic. How could I not be???? Thank you so much to everyone out there that took the time to vote for me for Best Yoga Instructor in Kelowna. I always thought that I didn't care about this contest. And after years of being an 'also ran', I actually had no expectations and would have been totally OK had it been the same result this year. But it wasn't. And I raced down to Kelowna Now this morning to pick up my certificate and get my picture taken so that I could properly show you my gratitude. It's a really good feeling. I just wish there was a Kelowna Now award for Best Yoga Students in Kelowna. Because you are all SOLID GOLD to me. I love you. Thank you.
In the last year, I have felt as though I wasn't sure where I was going with my teaching. I have felt unsure of my intention. I fell in love with yoga nearly 13 years ago as a student, my desire to become a yoga teacher was fueled by a passion that I had not found in any other area of my life. I am struggling to write this post. There have been so many things about being a yoga teacher right now that have not been great. Much of the stuff that goes on off the mat is incredibly 'non-yogi'. It makes me both sad and angry. Not yogic of me either. Some days I just want to walk away from it all. Since becoming a teacher, the greatest gift has been the relationships built with a core group of students at Oranj - you know who you are. You might not come every week but we've been together for years. Thank goodness for you... you remind me why I teach. There have been times when I really needed that more than you know. A few weeks ago, I gave up teaching YTT's for Oranj. The Kelowna training will be my last one. It was an offering that I loved, my love for the students, highest respect for Sheila and passion for leadership kept me in. But it was out of alignment for me from the start. And though giving it up was hard, it was right. This past weekend, I hosted the first of four Okanagan Yoga Retreats I will be leading at Predator Ridge Resort this summer. I was really nervous (yep, believe it or not, I still get nervous nearly every time I teach), I was scared that it wouldn't be as good without my sidekick. That I wouldn't be good enough to carry it on my own. But it was good. Actually, it was great. And I finally feel a sense of clarity and purpose around teaching that I haven't felt in a really long time. Thank you universe for giving me patience to see this through. Sometimes there are shadows on the path that make it really difficult to move forward with certainty. Thank you to my Oranj friends for being the light that I needed to stay on the path when it would have been really easy to get off. Gratitude to my sister Kristie for standing by my side as we expand Okanagan Yoga Retreats into the offering it was always meant to become. xo Shauna PS - yes, that might be a sneak peak of the newest yoga platform up at Predator Ridge ... 😍😍
Shauna Nyrose Yoga ~ updated their cover photo.
Retreat Season drops this weekend! I'm so so so grateful to be hosting these beautiful experiences up at Predator Ridge Resort again this year. These retreats are the highlight of my teaching offering, everything that I just can't squeeze into a 60 minute class. If you were thinking just for a moment that this might be for you, it is. I still have 10 spots left in the August retreat, all the others are full. The sky is so big, and the view will take your breath away. And we drink wine and laugh and tell dirty jokes. It's the best. More the same than different. 💕 Connection is everything.
Hi friends. For local k-town yogi's looking to do meaningful work for really awesome people... my friend Mandy owns The Zen Den on Pandosy. Beautiful, intentional offering, BC yoga brands, and a super great SOPA vibe. They are looking for a PT sales person to cover shifts - weekdays. Probably 12ish hours a week. If you are interested, please PM me and I will connect you directly with Mandy. <3
I'm teaching Power this morning at 10:30a Oranj Fitness Kelowna. Do it for you. Or the mini-eggs. 😉 Happy Easter 🐰
I have been so blessed with amazing partnerships along my path as a yoga teacher. I have missed my yoga sister. Teaching with her has been some of the greatest moments. But... there has also always been a brother... humbly by our side; the sweet, sensitive, crazy, 'wear-my-cat-in-a-backpack', 'wear-my-jammies-to-yoga' brother. And he and I are getting the band back together. Coming Mondays, 7pm Oranj Fitness Kelowna... starting April 24. Guitar Flow w/ Nyrose + Dagan + You. Co-creating > yoga, inspiration, music and love <3 #yogafamjam
I am so happy it's spring! What a beautiful day. I notice my yoga feeds ripe with promises of detox flows and dietary cleanses. If you are considering a 'spring detox' of any kind, I would ask you to look closely at what your 'detox' consists of, particularly any yoga class or workshop offering to detox through postures, heated room temperature or otherwise. As a new teacher, I believed what others had told me about twists and forward bends being detoxifying. I also felt intuitively that heated classes were 'detoxing'. But the science is really clear. You cannot detox the body through physical postures. There is only ONE WAY to detox in a yoga class. Yep, you guessed it - breathe! It's true. Your yoga practice will offer you many, many benefits; strength, flexibility and balance of body, mind and spirit; a peaceful heart, a compassionate perspective... a different kind of cleanse. If you truly want a detox though, all you have to do is head outside for a walk in that glorious Okanagan sunshine... and breathe deeply and fully. And THAT is one of the BEST yoga practices I know! 💗 Psst - you don't have to just take my word for it. ;) https://www.theguardian.com/science/sifting-the-evidence/2014/jan/13/demystifying-detox-can-yoga-really-cleanse-the-liver
